  • "I must preach the kingdom of God .... for I was sent for this purpose."
  • Luke 4:43
  • What is the Kingdom of God?
    • 21 nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."(Luke 17)
    • 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Rom.14)
    • 17 May Christ through your faith (actually) dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! (Eph 3)
  • Luke 16
    • "You cannot serve both God and Money."14The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.
    • 18 "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
  • Two Basic Matters
  • 1. Dealing with Sins
  • 2. Feeding Others Christ
  • 1. Dealing with Sins
    • 1 He said to His disciples, "It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come!
    • 2 "It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble."
    • 3 "Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
    • 4 "And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' forgive him."
    • 5 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
    • 6 He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.
  • A Comparison
  • Stumbling blocks
    • Justifying our sinful ways
    • They become "normal", accepted, even encouraged
    • They become wrapped up and packaged as our religious life
    • With the Pharisees, it included love of money and divorce
  • Sins
    • Rebuke
    • Repent
    • Forgive
  • NEVER JUSTIFY YOUR SINS
  • Sins vs Faith
  • Sins
    • Start small
    • If not dealt with, they take root
    • They become a huge problem
    • Like a deeply rooted tree
    • They become stumbling blocks
  • Faith
    • Even a small amount of Christ in our heart can uproot the biggest sin
    • Christ within motivates us to
      • Rebuke
      • Repent
      • Forgive
      • Rebuke is epitimao—put honor upon you
  • In the Light
    • We can rebuke one another in love
    • We can repent of our sin
    • We can forgive one another
  • In the darkness
    • We really don't care about one another in Christ
    • We defend ourselves and justify ourselves and get offended
    • We continually remind ourselves and the sinning one of their sin
  • Forgiveness
    • Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled. (Heb 12:14-15)
    • Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. (Eph. 4:31-32)
  • 2. Feeding Others Christ
    • 7 "Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come immediately and sit down to eat'?
    • 8 "But will he not say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink'?
    • 9 "He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he?
    • 10 "So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'"
  • The Secret to Service
    • Our aim is to please the Lord
    • If you focus on the fruit of your work, you will:
      • Either get proud
      • Or discouraged
  • What We Ought to Do
  • Plowing
    • The goal of plowing is to grow Christ in our heart
  • Tending Sheep
    • We feed the saints what we have gained of Christ
  • Many Ways to Plow
    • Open up your heart to the Lord in repentance and confession
    • Enjoy the precious word of God
    • Join Christ in prayer
    • Sing songs to the Lord
    • Allow the Lord to regulate your life, your thoughts, your attitude, your behavior
    • Gain Christ in His specific attributes while you work, drive, play, shop, etc.
  • Many Ways to Tend Sheep
    • 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
    • 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
    • 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. (Rom. 12)
